NOTE: This is an excerpt from the book The Least You Should Know About Life.
Take another look at Albert Einstein’s statement, “Insanity is when you keep doing the same thing and expect a
different result.” As a scientist, Einstein understood a fundamental law
of nature, a law that Jesus expressed as follows, “Therefore all things
whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them”
(Matthew 7:12). Jesus also said, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For
with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye
mete, it shall be measured to you again” (Matthew 7:2) What was Jesus
really saying? He was saying the same as Einstein, only using different
words.
All spiritual teachers have been saying the same thing, and the message is clear: THE UNIVERSE IS A MIRROR! Whatever you
send out will inevitably be reflected back to you by the cosmic mirror. So
if you keep sending out the same thing – by taking the same approach to
life – what will the cosmic mirror reflect back to you?
Imagine that you see a person sitting in front of an actual mirror with an unhappy expression on his face. You question him
and find out that he has been waiting – for days – for the mirror image to
smile at him. You say, “But if you want the mirror image to smile, you
have to first smile at the mirror!” He replies, “I can’t smile at the
mirror until I have a reason to smile, and I won’t have that until the
mirror smiles at me—you fool!”
Obviously, you would think the person was insane. Well, isn’t it insanity that so many people continue to take the same
attitude to life? They want to be happy, but they think they need certain
outer conditions in order to be happy. So they keep doing the same thing
while waiting for life to give them the conditions that will make them
happy. Yet how can the cosmic mirror reflect back the abundant life until
you send out the abundant consciousness?
Most people have heard the Golden Rule and they will say they agree with it. Yet they somehow cannot put it into action.
They are still waiting for other people to treat them nicely before they
start treating others nicely. They are still waiting for life to treat
them nicely before they send out a vibration of happiness.
The equation is simple. If you keep doing the same thing – if you keep approaching life the same way – your life will not
change. If your life is to change, you MUST BEGIN BY CHANGING YOURSELF!
Only when you send out a different message will the cosmic mirror reflect
back a different image.
If you take an honest look at the world, you will see that most human beings are trapped in this form of insanity, and they
are waiting for their world to change without doing anything to change
themselves. The message of all true spiritual teachings – and most
teachings on self-help and psychology – is that there is an alternative to
this approach. No matter how difficult your situation might seem, there
is something you can do to change your situation for the better. It may
seem as if you are boxed in by circumstances over which you have no
control—and in many cases you have no immediate control over certain outer
circumstances. Yet you are never in a situation where you have no options
for changing some aspect of your situation.
This leads to another of the great lies that you have been programmed to believe. It goes hand-in-hand with the lie that
happiness is the product of outer conditions. This lie says that your
state of mind – your inner conditions – is a product of your outer
circumstances. It essentially states that your mind is a house with no
lock on the door. So whatever happens in your outer circumstances will
automatically make you either happy or unhappy.
Those who want to control you want to keep you believing in this lie. They do not want you to discover the underlying
truth that your mind is only unprotected as long as you are making
unconscious choices—letting others make choices for you. They do not want
you to know that you have an alternative to this approach, for if you did
know that the universe is a mirror, you would know that you can – truly –
change your outer circumstances by changing your consciousness. Instead of
being a slave of outer circumstances, you can take command over your inner
circumstances, your mind. To do this effectively, you need to understand
the Equation of Life.
